mini-sessions at Due Maternity / Addy’s Closet
How did our parents ever know what to do with us when there was down time to fill? I suppose they read about events in the local paper and they used the yellow pages. Today it is so easy to quickly find out about upcoming events and fun happenings around Atlanta. I have several blogs I follow with good information on events around town. However, for those local to the Smyrna/Vinings area- this one is especially for you!
Are you tired of scouring the web and newspapers for fun things to do with your kids? Then sign up for the Smyrna Vinings Macaroni Kid weekly e-newsletter by clicking here: Smyrna/Vinings Macaroni Kids
Each Thursday you will receive a newsletter filled with all of the great things to do with your family in Smyrna/Vinings and beyond. You can view the site online, but subscribe in order to be eligible for great giveaways, such as tickets to Mulan at the Alliance theatre. We also have a facebook fan page – become a fan and get updated information throughout the week on events and activities !
If you have questions or events you would like to submit, don’t hesitate to contact the editor, Michelle Sisco, at michelles@macaronikid.com

Let’s hear it for the birthday boy!

Last year, for Taylor’s birthday, we photographed him at the baseball fields. Taylor is athletic and very into all “boy things”! So, the baseball fields were the perfect fit for him.
This year, mom and I decided to go down to the river for Taylor’s session. Do you know any four-year-old boys who don’t love water, rocks, mud and sticks?

Taylor was willing to work a little for the fun! I asked Taylor if he would lie down on the ground like I was doing. He looked at me and said, “the ground is cold”. Yeah- he was right.. it was cold…

These last few days in Atlanta have been heavenly with such great weather. Our au pair, who is from Thailand, asked if we were now entering Spring. I had to give her the bad news that this warmth and sun would not be here to stay. Luckily, during this session the sun shone brightly!

The sweetest part of this session… how Taylor adores his mom. His mom said she was worried this might be the last year he adores her this much and she wanted to capture that. As a mom of two boys, aged 3 and 6, I know boys are just wonderful with their moms for quite a while. I can’t vouch for past age 6 but i know my 6-year-old is just the most precious, affectionate kid ever!

Happy birthday Taylor and I can’t wait to hear all about that Batman party you told me about.

I have a very special little girl to introduce you to. If you live in Smyrna, Vinings, or Mableton you will be seeing her grace the cover of Our Town magazine this week for the September issue. Her name is Sophie and her passion is helping raise money for the Atlanta Animal Pet Rescue. To accomplish her fund raising goal, Sophie made a 2010 calendar to sell. The proceeds from the sale of the calendar go to the rescue center. Here is a picture of Sophie with her darling calendar:

We asked Sophie some questions about her project.
Where and when did your love for animals begin?
I have loved animals ever since I can remember. When I was born we had two dogs named Jesse and Winnie and I loved them right away! They are in Heaven now.
What is your favorite animal and why?
Oliver, my dog, is my favorite animal. He is my favorite because he sleeps in my bed with me. My second favorite animals are elephants.
Here is a picture of Sophie with Oliver. I think it is clear how much she adores him!

How did you come up with the idea to do a calendar to raise money for an animal shelter?
I love to do art and I care for animals so it was the perfect thing to do!
What would you like to accomplish with your calendar earnings?
I want to give all of my money to the Atlanta Pet Rescue and I want to help animals that are hurt or that don’t have a home.
Tell us about your pets at home.
Oliver is really fuzzy and likes to chase my little brother around and likes to chew on everything! He is very protective, especially when the Pizza man comes! He is also very loyal.
When I photographed Sophie, it was clear to me she is not only good with pets but she is also very good with little kids, like her brother!

The money from the calendars and any donations I get go to helping dogs such as “Sparky.” Sparky is a sweet dog that was horribly mistreated by someone and needed to see many people and veterinarians to help him. My calendar could help many more animals like Sparky to find the medical care they need and loving homes they deserve. If you would like to read about Sparky or all of the wonderful things the Atlanta Pet Rescue is doing, please go to their website.
If you would like to purchase one of Sophie’s calendars ($20 each) please e.mail her at sophiehelps@charter.net

There is a little bread shop just up the street from the studio. The bread they make there is mouth watering. I honestly think there is nothing better then freshly made bread with real butter.
This little shop is one of Libbie’s favorite lunch spots in Smyrna. She likes it because sometimes she runs into friends who want to play.

Other times she just goes in for the yummy free samples which help her figure out which bread she likes best. Libbie’s mom likes for Libbie to have the High 5 Fiber bread. She knows that Libbie loves it because it is yummy and the fiber is just plain good for little Miss Libbie!

The sweet store owner, Lorrie, shares a little more about the shop:

1. What drove you to start your business? My husband and I grew up in
Minnesota where the Great Harvest is very popular. For a LONG time, we have
loved the whole concept, the products and the atmosphere that GH Bakeries
provide. When Lorrie decided to exit the medical field, we were drawn
quickly to the idea of owning our own bakery.

2. Tell us a little about your business: At the Great Harvest we mill our
wheat berries everyday into flour to make the most healthy and nutritious
breads and sweets. We bake our breads and sweets fresh every day (that we
are open). Our fresh and spectacular bread is what makes our phenomenal
sandwiches so different from others. We love being part of the community
and helping the local schools, neighborhood associations and fund raisers.
3. What is your favorite bread you make and why? I love High 5 Fiber. It
tastes great by itself, as a sandwich or toasted. Not only does it taste
great it is good for you with 5g of fiber per slice.

4. What’s on your nightstand? The bible, picture of my kids and various
books that I try to get to. However working in the bakery, I am usually too
tired to do much reading!
5. What is your favorite family must-do in the Atlanta area? We love biking
on the Silver Comet Trail as a family. Kids sports take up a lot of our
free time as Chris coaches a lot and Lorrie hates to miss the boys’ games!
