While shopping  a couple of weeks ago, we stumbled upon the perfect bookshop and Libbie heartily approved so we wanted to share it with you. Surprised? While she’s quite at home swinging in trees, Libbie also loves a good story. Like most children, she’s multi-faceted.

Nestled amongst Vinings Nail Salon where Peggy gives a mean pediure and Alameda Restaurant with awesome Spanish food (as well as Bella’s Pizza and other shops), The Book Stop is a haven for children and moms alike. Ginny manages to make The Book Stop kid-friendly without being too childlike for those times when Mom wants to stop by for some reading material sans the little ones.

Ginny took some time to chat with me while I was photographing The Book Stop to share with my Libbie Wicket friends. Grab a glass of something cold and learn a little more about one of my new must-stop spots.

What drove you to start your business? I worked for a friend’s bookstore in Mandeville, LA for 8 years. With my love of books and talking to people (I’ve never met a stranger!) it was a good fit. When my husband’s job got redirected after Katrina, I knew that once we got settled, I would open my own bookstore and began collecting books (I needed about 10,000 to start!) It took about 3 years to get enough books, the location, etc. to open The Book Stop.
Tell us a little about your business: If you’re an avid reader, even paperbacks get expensive. Book swaps have been around a long time and are all run a little differently. I sell paperbacks at 1/2 the original cover price and give book credit to use at the store at 1/4 the cover price.  Then when you make your purchase, you may use half book credit and half cash, check or charge. Most customers understand that a cash flow is necessary, but there have been a few who just want to “trade” books!

What’s on your nightstand? Currently on my night stand is Mary Kay Andrews’ new release “The Fixer Upper”. I met her a couple of weeks ago at her book signing and she’s as delightful in person as you would suspect from her books. She’s a Georgia author who also writes mysteries under her real name of Kathy Hogan Trocheck.
What is your favorite family must-do in the Atlanta area? We’ve only lived in Atlanta just shy of two years, but so far my favorite attraction has been the Aquarium!
How do we find you? The Book Stop is open M-F 10am-6pm, Sat. 10am-5pm, and closed on Sun.  Throughout the summer, we are open Thursdays late until 8pm. Phone number is 770-435-7636 and email is ginny@thebookstoponline.com. Soon-t0-be-website is thebookstoponline.com. It should be up by August!

The Book Stop

When I began my business in 2004, I knew I wanted to partner with the best family-friendly businesses in the Atlanta metro. Places where I felt comfortable as a mom and a wife and a mother, knowing I was spending my money on quality products, in local businesses, owned by people I enjoyed working with and getting to know.

I am proud to have displays in both locations of Due Maternity for several years and it’s been a fabulous relationship for both Libbie Wicket and store owner Heather Paradice.

“Shortly after I opened I was searching for a photographer to showcase their work in my Vinings boutique. Elizabeth came highly recommended by a close friend and not only do I have her fantastic photos in both of my locations, I have used her personally to photograph my family.

I meet expecting moms every day that are about to embark on a new life-changing journey. My job is to help these women look and  feel beautiful with their growing baby bellies. I’ve been there, and I know at the end of those long nine months little ones grow so fast. I am fortunate to have those special moments with my little Lilah captured by Elizabeth. Due Maternity’s partnership with Libbie Wicket  allows us  to connect our wonderful customers with a talented and loving photographer that will capture every moment of their growing family.

Currently Due Maternity is having their annual summer clearance sale. Select spring and summer merchandise is discounted 20-50% to make room for fall. I have so many items that I love to recommend, but one of my favorites right now is the See You In Miami maxi dress. It’s perfect for that beach wedding or you can throw it on with flip flops for a more casual look. We always have it in a variety of patterns and colors.

When you visit either Due Maternity location, mention Libbie Wicket and receive 15% off your entire purchase.”

In the meantime, here’s a peek at a part of our current Due Maternity display:

And here is more of Heather’s fabulous stock! Anything a pregnant and/or new mommy could want, she’ll find at Due Maternity. It was fun to walk through the store, taking pictures and chatting with Heather, and remembering this part of my world.

Due Maternity

I met this family two years ago when they hired me to photograph their newborn. They are an interesting couple who love wine, the mountains, good food, and time with friends. All things that my husband and I love too! So, slowly over the past two year, we have developed a good friendship with them. The husbands took sailing classes together in the Spring and are both now certified to sail.
So, when K. asked me to take her maternity portraits, I thought it would be fun to make a weekend out of it. We headed to our mountain house in the BlueRidge mountains for a weekend away with a little photography mixed in. The first night we cooked and played at the cabin but by Saturday morning we were ready to get out and explore. We started with a walk around the property and found lots of neat places in just that little area. atlanta family photographer

However, I wanted to do something a little more “urban” with them so we headed into Blueridge. We found this old 1800′s building that was ultra cool!

Little A. perked up a little bit once we got going and she caught a good case of the giggles. I would do a quick tickle and then a photograph, tickle, photograph, tickle, photograph, and then I knew I had it. The perfect stance and the cutest expression possible! What do you think? It is a favorite of mine from the session!

We had a great lunch at the BBQ place in town and then headed back to the cabin. The rest of the day was filled with a lazy float down the river in our inner tubes, a yummy dinner out at Repaz restaurant in Blueridge, and then a movie at the local drive-in. If you have never been to the drive in theater, it is a must do. We went for the first time about three months ago. We took the children and saw Hannah Montana. It was one of my favorite evenings from all summer. The children played ball in the field until the movie started and then we all snuggled in the back of the mini van and watched the movie. Okay… I am getting off topic.
So, the next morning it was sunny and cool and perfect for a few more pictures. The D. family and I climbed into their van and off we went to find some cool places. We finally found the perfect place. It was a beautiful flowing stream with a campsite off of it. We pulled into the empty campsite and all piled out.
Now I must insert here- I am known to often be adventurous. I am one of those people who is willing to do most anything to get “the shot”. I often get muddy, wet and dirty when on-location at sessions. So, the challenge of photographing this family in the stream was not worrisome to me in the least.
Into the stream I went…heading towards the middle. However, about two rocks in, I slipped and fell right on my rear end. I quickly jumped up thinking that the lens probably dipped in the water but hopefully the camera, which was strapped across my back, was fine. I stood up and grabbed for the camera. It was not there. I looked down and there it was, under the water. I pulled it up only to find that the strap had broken and it was only attached to one side of the camera. My heart sank. The cost of the camera and lens is close to $4500 and I knew there was a good chance it would not ever work again after this misfortune. I did my best to wipe the camera off. I took out the card and the battery to let it all dry out. I did not cry but I did feel really really sick to my stomach.
My friends had their Canon camera with them and we pulled it out so I could take a last few images of them. I do love this final image I got with their camera.

On the way back home we passed a turtle on the side of the road. C. (the Dad) asked if I wanted to stop and get it to show my kids. At first my downer spirit said, “no thanks” but then I had a quick change of heart and we turned around to pick it up. C. stopped the van and I got out to get the turtle. He was a fairly big turtle and my hand just barely stretched from one side of his back to the other side. I was really unsure about holding him as I was afraid he might bite me. C. re-assured me that he was scared of me and he would stay in his shell. This was not the case! He kept poking his head out and then he became increasingly braver. I got spooked and began almost crying/screaming. K. was saying, “Boo” to the turtle and trying to scare him back into his shell and it was not working. Finally C. took the turtle from me and drove home the rest of the way with one hand on the steering wheel and one hand on the turtle. It looked just like this:

K. and I started laughing hysterically. Looking back on it, I probably needed that big huge laugh to release all the emotions of the morning. God is good like that- He gives you appropriate releases when you have too many emotions pent up!
Sunday night, C. sent me this great link:
swimming cameras
I was inspired to soak the camera in rice for the night. Not sure if that helped at all- but it was an inexpensive, easy solution that might help! It is a good tip if ever any of you find yourself in a similar situation.
I will post an update on the camera when I have a little more information. I took it straight to the camera hospital on Monday morning and there it has been ever since. I did get an estimate for them to take it apart and look at it… $1000. Being in business is expensive and it does not help when you make silly mistakes!
Okay- sorry for the long post… I have been writing for an hour now… just so much to say! Have a great weekend!
****AN UPDATE TO THE STORY****
As of late Friday afternoon… I have my camera back in my hands and it is absolutely PERFECT!!!! No kidding… it is honestly a small miracle! Yes, it did cost $1000.00 but I see it as the most expensive camera cleaning ever and I am pleased as punch not to be buying another camera and lens. Seriously, God is good and I praise him for even small little miracles like this. :) Now, off to have my hair cut at Plum Hair Salon and go to this mommy’s baby shower! :)

a session and a lesson

A few months ago I photographed little H. with his mom and grand mom. You can click here to see a few from that session. Poor Dad was left out in the cold- probably working hard at the office that day. Since he was so missed, mom decided to do a session this time to showcase little H. and his Dad. As a family photographer I feel like it is an important part of my job to capture not just the individuals together but much more importantly the relationship of the individuals.
atlanta family photographer
H. is still young enough that it is cool to snuggle with Daddy. However, both mom and dad know those days are passing quickly and soon it will be “uncool” to snuggle up. Just the thought that day is coming is heartbreaking to me, as a parent. Sometimes I wish I could freeze time for a moment. However, we all know that there is no way to do this. Having portraits of your children as they grow is the easiest way to glimpse back in time and remember what was…

Look how sweet and serious he is here (it is a favorite):

This little guy was getting to the end of his rope with me and was about ready to call it quits. I find that this is the best time to bring out the water! Can any child be truly unhappy when surrounded by cool water on a hot summers day?

This image was followed by 20 minutes of fun play time in the water. H. loved to splash me and I had fun splashing him back! On the way back to the car, Dad carried H. since he was tired from all our adventures. Finally, after all our going and going, he rested on Dad. I could not resist getting several pictures of H. honestly trusting and relying on his Dad.

Thank you R. family for a perfect afternoon together!!!

I have not seen this family in over a year so it was very special for me to meet little C. for the first time and to photograph big sister E. again. Obviously, as you can see, both girls are drop dead beautiful! One with these deep dark eyes and one with these beautiful baby blues!

Big sister E. loves to put puzzles together. She told me that just that day she had put together a 70 piece princess puzzle. Really? At four years of age… that is super impressive! She is one beautiful and smart little cookie!

Little C. is a really really really (get the point) happy baby. You can’t help but smile at her because she is always smiling at you. Our session took place late in the day at a time most babies would be out-of-their-mind-fussy. Not little C. though. She had her serious moments but no crying at all. She is clearly a delightful baby!

Thank you H. girls for such a fun session. It was a pleasure spending the early evening hours with you. :)

sisters are special

My clients are my business and it delights me to share them with you in an ongoing series of blog posts. These are just some of the amazing people who bless me with their presence in my life and have become a part of the Libbie Wicket family. Maybe through their stories they’ll become a part of yours.

First, I’d like to introduce Amber whose volunteer work with Perinatal Mood Disorders (such as postpartum depression) touches my heart.

How did you meet Elizabeth? Elizabeth and I met in person for the first time when my child was 6 months old.  We had scheduled a newborn appointment that was canceled when I was rushed to the ER at 8 days postpartum, just 30 minutes before the session.  Eventually, I was diagnosed with a Postpartum Mood Disorder (actually a combination of them) and also some anemia and thyroid issues that caused the scare that morning.  It took a while before I was up to being photographed, but Elizabeth was so patient and kind to me, even though we didn’t know each other yet.  I knew we’d hit it off and that she was a good egg from the start!

Tell us a little about your last session with Elizabeth/Libbie Wicket? It was fabulous!  Unlike our 6 month session, this one was a mini-session which was at a park instead of our home.  Even though it was only 20 minutes and only included 12 or 15 shots, we wound up with a terrific result.  We used the photos for Christmas cards and framed some others.  At 14 months, so much had changed with our son since 6 months and she captured all the special new and exciting skills.  I can’t wait for our next session!

What’s on your nightstand? Always a glass of water, my Kindle (which by the way does NOT mix well with water), aromatherapy lotion and a coin holder.

What is your favorite family must-do in the Atlanta area? I suppose Stone Mountain Park…there is so much to enjoy there, and I love the Christian and family oriented focus.

Share your project/passion with us: I am a passionate volunteer and advocate for Perinatal Mood Disorders in Atlanta and the state of GA.  So much needs to be achieved in the future in order to be sure that the 1 in 8 women that suffer in this way are screened for problems, appropriately treated and referred and brought back to a state of wellness. Postpartum Depression is the most common complication of childbirth, yet most OB-GYNs have NO training in diagnosing or treating it.
